License plates advance recognizing pickleball, Mount St. Helens

OLYMPIA — The state Senate on Tuesday overwhelmingly approved creation of speciality license plates celebrating pickleball and Mount St. Helens.

Senate Bill 5333 would authorize a plate recognizing pickleball, designated last year as the official state sport. Proceeds from sales would go into a trust account managed by the Seattle Metro Pickleball Association and used to build and maintain courts dedicated to pickleball. The association is the driving force behind the effort.

The bill, sponsored by Sen. John Lovick, D-Mill Creek, passed 45-4.

Senate Bill 5590 would create one showcasing Washington’s most active volcano. Proceeds would go to the Mount St. Helens Institute, a private nonprofit organization, to support youth education, land stewardship and science at the volcano.
