South Seattle encampment cleared after outreach teams moved 74 people into shelter
Crews began work to clear out a homeless encampment in Seattle's SODO neighborhood Wednesday morning.
The encampment at the intersection of 6th Avenue and Airport Way is at least the fifth encampment to be cleared in the city in two weeks.
According to the King County Regional Homelessness Authority (KCRHA), 74 people who were living in the encampment were moved into shelter or permanent housing. The outreach was conducted as part of the Housing Command Center in downtown Seattle.
"I look forward to it being a permanent improvement and hopefully the illegal encampments wont come back," said Jay Yanamura, who lives near the encampment. "This year, theres definitely a change in attitude and were happy about that. The politicians were embarrassed by their lack of action and the constituents arent going to take it anymore.
