Seattle mayor proposes $970M levy to build affordable housing

Seattle city leaders are asking voters to approve a housing levy to build 3,000 new affordable housing units and fund other initiatives to help address the housing and homelessness crisis the city is grappling with.

But the measure could cost some taxpayers more than triple what they're currently paying.

The measure would generate $970 million over seven years to go toward building more affordable housing, as well as the operation and maintenance of those units, according to Seattle Mayor Bruce Harrell, who held a press conference Thursday.

Of the $970 million, $707 million would go toward producing rental housing units for seniors, people getting out of homelessness, working families with children, people with disabilities and other low-income housing.
