Private partner sought for Memorial Stadium redevelopment
Seattle Public Schools and the city have issued a request for proposals for a private partner to replace the landmark Memorial Stadium at Seattle Center.
It's a milestone in the decades-old effort to replace the 76-year-old stadium property, which includes Memorial Wall dedicated to the nearly 800 alumni who lost their lives in World War II. The winning proposer will restore Memorial Wall and complete other requirements.
Whoever is selected will invest in, design, build, operate, maintain and manage the new stadium, which SPS will continue to own. Proposals are due May 2, with the selection up to the city and school district.
Over $86 million in voter-approved levy funds and money from the city has been appropriated for the project, with another $23 million of city and state funds anticipated in the coming years. This will supplement what City Council President Debora Juarez says will be "substantial" private investment.
