Oso mudslide 9th year memorial set for Wednesday
OSO March 22 marks the ninth anniversary of the Oso mudslide, and the public is invited to attend this years remembrance ceremony.
In 2014, a rain-saturated hill gave way, displacing tons of rock and debris, killing 43 people. It was the deadliest slide in U.S. history. To honor the victims, family members will speak, read their names and offer prayers at Wednesdays 10 a.m. ceremony.
Attendees can park in one of three designated lots at Steelhead Drive from 8:30 to 9:30 a.m. A shuttle will transport people to the ceremony. Tents, warm beverages and cookies will be available courtesy of Snohomish County Parks. A sound system, tables and chairs will be set up courtesy of the Oso Fire Department.
The ceremony is expected to last about an hour. There will be a brief update on the permanent memorial and its future funding. Chaplain Joel Johnson will lead prayer and South County Fires honor guard bagpipers will perform Amazing Grace.
