BOTHELL A special education teacher restrained one of her kindergarten students in the lunchroom at Lockwood Elementary in September 2021, causing the girl to become so upset and overstimulated from the restraint that she vomited, according to a new lawsuit filed against the Northshore School District.
The school contacted her mother to pick her up, but did not mention what led up to the girl getting sick.
The childs family sued the school district alleging the parents were illegally barred from seeing what was happening in the classroom, as the teacher repeatedly restrained the child throughout the school year and did not properly document it.
The parents, who are deaf, believe they were discriminated against because they are one of the few Black families served by the school and that white parents are not treated in the same manner.

Deaf students who are main-streamed (public schools) are ALWAYS treated differently. It is a sad statement of affairs that this woman, who obviously has no business in a classroom, much less one with special needs children, was allowed to remain at this school. And I guarantee that this is NOT the first time she has abused this child or other special needs children. I have seen this behavior too many times to believe that.
Too many educators who are not trained to work with Deaf children often fail to realize that there may be other conditions present that might affect a Deaf child's behavior.
And then there's the issue of the child's race. Minority Deaf children are far too often mistreated in public schools. Seen that too.
Let's hope that this school gets the proper orientation training they need to see to it that these children are given the same rights and treatment that the other parents take for granted that their children are receiving.
