Semi crashes, hangs off ramp from US 2 to I-5 in Everett

EVERETT — A semi truck overturned Thursday morning on a ramp to I-5 near Everett Avenue, spilling debris into the street and causing an “extended closure.”

State Department of Transportation traffic cameras showed the semi’s trailer over the edge of the ramp from westbound U.S. 2, following the crash around 10:50 a.m.

The crash was reportedly blocking traffic heading north onto I-5. The truck’s load — which appeared to be garbage — spilled onto Everett Avenue below. The arterial street through the city was closed for about three blocks, according to Everett police.

“Expect this to last a few hours,” police tweeted.

It's 2 kilograms (about 5 pounds) a day per capita of municipal waste. (EPA figures for 2018, Canada is worse)

That doesn't count manufacturing waste or business waste or retail/wholesale waste or agricultural waste or municipal wastewater sludge.

Even so, at 5 pounds per person per day, means a household of 4 produces about 7,300 pounds or 3.5 tons of waste a year.

Suppose the truck carries 10,000 lb of waste. That's a week's worth of garbage for 71 families. An apartment building or a small subdivision.

Every week.

Only 30% of garbage is recycled.

1. Canada

• Estimated annual waste per capita: 36.1 metric tons

• Estimated annual waste total: 1,325,480,289 metric tons

• Waste treatment recycling: 20.6%

• Population: 36,708,083

Driven by agricultural waste and industrial waste generation, which totaled 181 million tonnes and 1.12 billion tonnes, respectively, in 2017, Canada's estimated total waste generation is the highest in the world. Canada produced 1.33 billion metric tonnes of waste, or 36.1 tonnes per person.
