New approach underway to help combat homelessness as it returns to Smokey Point Rest Stop

Homeless people are returning to a rest stop that has been shut down before because campers caused so many problems. Trash would get dumped, buildings were vandalized, and there were even instances where state workers were threatened.

Efforts are now underway to keep that from happening again as the Smokey Point Rest Stop near Arlington sees a new round of people camping out.

Talbott estimated that there are about 50 people who stay each night to take advantage of the restrooms and running water and acknowledges that past encampments at the popular rest stop got out of hand.

“They had RVs parked everywhere, and people were doing drugs around here like crazy," Talbott said. "It was pretty bad.”
