Microsoft job cuts in King County surpass 2,000 with latest round

Microsoft Corp. (Nasdaq: MSFT) layoffs in Washington state have reached over 2,000 as the Redmond-based software giant notifies more employees following its January announcement of 10,000 job cuts companywide.

The latest round includes 689 roles based in Redmond, Bellevue and Issaquah, according to a Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification the company filed Monday with the state Employment Security Department. The layoffs are effective immediately; employees will receive severance until May 5.

The company said in January it would trim about 4.5% of its 221,000-person workforce, and so far has notified 2,184 employees in the Puget Sound area that their roles will be eliminated.

Microsoft did not respond to a request for comment.
