Updated codes mandate electric vehicle charging stations for most new construction in Kitsap
Beginning July 1, most construction of new buildings in Kitsap County is required to include a certain number of electric vehicle (EV) charging stations and parking places for bikes in the development project.
After months of discussions within the county, the Kitsap County Board of Commissioners on Feb. 13 approved the adoption of an ordinance amending the county's code Title 14 (buildings and construction) and Title 17 (zoning), which relates to parking standards for bikes and electric vehicle charging.
The discussion started in late 2021, when the Kitsap County Department of Community Development staff presented the county board with a plan to strengthen bike parking and EV charging stations to align with state requirements. DCD drafted the amendments and public comments regarding the issue were received between late December and late January.
According to the final amendment approved by the commissioners, electric vehicle charging stations should be provided at all new construction projects, and redevelopment projects where the project cost is 50% or more of the assessed value of the buildings. Exceptions are made when the dwelling units don't have garages or other on-site parking, or when there are no public utilities or commercial power supply.
