Coalition wants Washington state building code amendments tossed
An unusual group of businesses and homeowners, trade associations and union workers is asking a judge to declare invalid recently approved changes to Washington's building code.
Filed on Tuesday in Thurston County Superior Court, the lawsuit challenges changes made by the State Building Code Council late last year. The amendments require builders to install heat pumps in new buildings built after July 1, essentially eliminating use of natural gas and propane, say the plaintiffs, including the Building Industry Association of Washington.
A building code council representative said the council doesn't comment on pending litigation.
The legal challenge by Blue Star Gas of Seattle, the Northwest Hearth Patio and Barbecue Association is not anti-environmentalism but rather about housing equity, a BIAW spokeswoman wrote in an email to the Business Journal.
