Washington
Related: About this forumWhy I live in Washington staate
1. Liberal values where woke goes to thrive
2. Probably the best air in the U.S. Check out ratings for Bellingham
3. Water: around us and in the air
4. Abortion: choice and not religious influence
5. Effective governor
6. Natural beauty until you get near Idaho
7. No state income tax
8. World-class university in Seattle (check the ratings)
9. Fish. You buy salmon/halibut at very, very reasonable prices. This isn't Oklahoma
10. You don't carry AR-15s on the street. This isn't a MAGA state
11. Donald Trump doesn't visit and Sarah Hillbilly Sanders has no idea where we are
12. Asians. Good people who bring so much value to our Left Coast communities
13. People of color. You actually greet them at the local pub, and they greet you because there are no Confederate flags here
14. Mild winters, lack of sun. This is when we travel
15. Trees grow here at massive heights
16. Close to Hawaii
17. Innovation. Microsoft, Boeing, Amazon, Costco, Fluke, Starbucks, Alaka Airlines, Expedia, REI
18. Finally, no tornadoes or hurricanes. An earthquake every 30-40 years
love It here in Washington

(25,835 posts)It's a subtle but transcendent beauty!
montanacowboy
(6,286 posts)if we could only cut off the eastern part of the State and give it to Idaho. I can't think of any other state I would rather live in. Montana has gone the way of the DoDo bird since I lived there. They have really lost their minds over there.

Sounds like mine Only we deal with Hurricanes once in awhile.

(18,544 posts)Nah, it doesn't sound much my state, except politically. Other than that, the winters suck and the scenery is a big snore.

(305,008 posts)Don't you have a big lake around there?
ShazzieB
(18,544 posts)It's lovely, but just far enough away that I don't see it often enough.
And yes, politically is extremely important, especially these days when the red states are getting crazier and crazier all the time!

(158,535 posts)you have just made me add Washington state as a possible retirement place
do you have any town recs?

(56 posts)Check out Edmonds by the Sound. Anywhere west of the Cascades. Housing is not cheap but neither is happiness. Imagine living in Oklahoma, Arkansas, Alabama, Florida with DeSantis, Missouri, the Dakotas, Kentucky, I could go on.
Our view in the morning are snow-capped Olympic Range, Puget Sound, Mount Baker, and visions of grandeur

(158,535 posts)so I am well-aware of red state hell
Wisconsin was my favorite pit-stop as a GI brat but I have soured on it because of the creeping GOP fascist influence there

(2,977 posts)A progressive island surrounded by a sea of red but, some of the surrounding areas are coming around. Winchester has a large solar farm right next to I-64. Pikeville is unique in Appalachia as they are now promoting growing tourist interests (hiking, zip lines, boutique eateries, live music, etc.). Yes, we have McConnell, Paul, Comer and Massie but, we do have a very good Democratic governor in Andy Beshear. We're also an hour away (give or take) from Cincinnati and Louisville for more things to do. We also have one of the lowest costs of living in the country.

(1,014 posts)If you ski Bellingham or Snohomish
If you want to participate in cultural events, sports, opera etc close to the metropolitan areas.
Otherwise out in the county. Rent for 6 months before you buy. It wouldn't be too hard to end up in a pocket of rw nutjobs. There are more than you would think.
Late August through late October is heaven on earth.

(158,535 posts)I thought it was fun but not worth the cost / effort......too much work for me
definitely prefer city / burbs to rural
I already live around rightwing nutjobs, it's kind of a mission of mine to torment them.....
sample: old gal says to me, "I don't think homosexuals are natural." I looked at her like a bug in a jar and replied, "I don't think YOU'RE natural" and walked off

(2,457 posts)10.1% sales tax is regressive.
But if you want to get to heaven, you've got to raise a little hell. Agree on sales tax, go south to Oregon (no sales tax) and then come back to heaven

(5,582 posts)Lots of community activity; we volunteer at the Seattle Aquarium (hit my 20-year anniversary there last year!) and Museum of Flight, and we're member/owners of a co-op brewery here in Seattle.
When I first moved here it was the beginning of the 'craft brew' movement. Now you can find some VERY good beer all around the country.

(1,007 posts)I can vouch for everything said above. The microbrew here is fantastic also. Friendly people. Ocean views and snow capped mountains. Canada is a 15 minute drive. You gotta love this place. The housing prices are crazy though.

(56 posts)Good point on Canada. It's very close in the event Trump or that moron DeSantis get elected. Read about Canada's gun bans. You can actually go to a public place without getting gunned down.

(56 posts)yes. Both eastern Oregon and Washington is where we deposit the less educated and informed. And, they try to win statewide elections. GOP offered a woman called Tiffany Smiley for US Senator in 2022. she lost by more than 600K votes.

(12,769 posts)What a difference in peace of mind being here. Bought our house in 2013 after looking closely at maps with projected sea level rise. We are at 28 feet above sea level and we are now questioning if its enough.
Have thoughts of changing coasts, we LOVE hiking in Washington! Also appreciate the diversity and seafood (yes we have gotten used to fresh at reasonable prices) and fresh craft beers - we live 2 blocks from original Dogfish brew pub. We are looking at Washington and Oregon.

(6,673 posts)handicapped daughter was accepted and taught well in the schools. And that the playmates of our sons treated her so nicely. They accepted her as a human being and was happy when she did things. One kid was happy to see her play with toy cars and go up and down the stairs, etc. The weather was wonderful too. Rain and more rain. All the time rain!!
