Discount grocer WinCo sets opening date for second Tacoma store

The wait is over for fans of the Boise, Idaho-based discount grocer WinCo Foods. The company’s second Tacoma store will open in the Highland Hill Shopping Center Feb. 6 at 9 a.m., according to an announcement on its website.

The city of Tacoma issued the store’s certificate of occupancy Monday, which gives the the company the green light to open its doors. The company website listed several job openings as of Tuesday.

In April 2020, WinCo filed its first permits to revamp the 55,000-square-foot former Safeway store in the shopping center. Construction on the $6.1 million remodel started early last year. Safeway, which occupied that location for decades, closed in 2020.

This will be WinCo’s second Tacoma location. It is situated at 6201 Sixth Ave., near the city’s pricey North End neighborhood. WinCo’s other Tacoma store is located at 1913 S. 72nd St. in the South Tacoma area.
