Biaselli Sentenced to 30 Years for Walmart Thefts

{edited to add}

The reason I posted this article is the length of the sentence. It had me scratching my head too. There must be a lot more to this guy than meets the eye. It says in the article, "the jury considered Biaselli’s extensive criminal record in fixing punishment." I don't live around there. Maybe this guy has been in and out of the system for years.

I expect there will be some follow-up articles that elaborate on the length of the sentence.

A Vinton man has been sentenced to 30 years in prison for a series of thefts from the Covington Walmart. ... Derek James Biaselli was sentenced Monday on six counts of grand larceny. He was tried before a jury in Alleghany County Circuit Court on Nov. 20, 2020.

At his sentencing hearing Monday, the court followed the jury’s recommendation and fixed punishment at 30 years in prison. ... Ann Gardner, commonwealth’s attorney for Alleghany County and Covington, said the jury considered Biaselli’s extensive criminal record in fixing punishment.

The jury found that Biaselli entered the Walmart in Covington six times over a period of three days. Biaselli stole over $7,000 in merchandise. The crimes were committed in January 2019.

Witnesses confirmed that Biaselli pawned some of the stolen merchandise for cash, Gardner said. ... The Covington Police Department and Walmart’s asset protection team investigated the case.

We have corporations and billionaires doing way worse. Just my 2 cents.

the state of Florida. It might be the same person.

I'm speculating here, but perhaps he was part of a ring that traveled around the country hitting big box stores and carrying out major league heists.

Maybe that acconts for the length of the sentence.

.
.
Quick Google . . . .

Among the 45 states that provided data (representing 1.29 million of the 1.33 million total people incarcerated in all 50 state prison systems), the total cost per inmate averaged $33,274 and ranged from a low of $14,780 in Alabama to a high of $69,355 in New York.

State - - - Prison population - Average cost per inmate
North Carolina - 37,066 - - - - - $30,180

That's $2,772.83 a month . . . .

I get $1800/mo on our Canadian Guaranteed Income pension plan . . .

hmmmm
