Youngkin and billionaire Leonsis' arena plans blocked

Leonsis wants a huge taxpayer subsidy to move two teams’ arena to Alexandria. It’s very unpopular with neighbors too. The proposal isn’t completely dead yet but a Dem committee chair is blocking it for now. Yay!

It's the "Same Old Stuff, Different Team" happening again and again. KC, MO has a vote on funding on April 2nd for a new baseball stadium in downtown KC for the Royals and an $ 800 million upgrade for Arrowhead Stadium, home of the Chiefs. The proposal isn't a good look for either team in that the Royals baseball team hasn't been even acceptably good for a while and the Chiefs got funding for upgrading their stadium in 2010 that isn't yet paid off.. Ticket prices and parking fees for teams' games puts the costs for a family of four out of reach for many working class and even middle class families. While sports figures and local celebrities are appearing in ads promoting the proposal, there's more than a little suspicion among the general public that the funding is for the benefit of billionaire ownership. I haven't attended a game for either team in more than ten years and I'm satisfied with just watching the television broadcasts. If the teams threaten to go if the funding is denied, I'd kind of miss having local teams but the idea of private profit and public expense leads me to think that life will go on without them. If they can't pay their own way, then they can hit the I-70 highway that sits in sight of the stadiums.
