Severe storms bring damage, possible tornadoes in Fairfax County

There may have been brief tornado touchdowns near Centreville and in Tysons.

An evening of strong to severe thunderstorms and inclement weather ended with multiple tornado warnings that affected Fairfax County, southern Montgomery County and the northern part of the District.

Preliminary radar data, damage reports and public observations indicate there may have been brief tornado touchdowns near Centreville and Tysons Corner.

However, confirmation of the tornadoes awaits damage surveys from the National Weather Service forecast office in Sterling, which typically are conducted the day after the storm.

The storm system responsible for the potential twisters is the same one that unleashed dozens of tornadoes across the South on Wednesday and into Thursday morning, resulting in numerous injuries and at least two fatalities.

He told me that a possible tornado had touched down.

He moved there from Kansas, so he knows tornadoes.

When we first moved to Kansas, from Colorado, we spent a lot of nights in the basement of our home listening to the weather radio.

The only time I ever saw a funnel cloud was when we lived in Boulder, and I was looking at houses on the eastern edge of the city, looking towards Denver.

For what it's worth, earlier today, the skies above me in Santa Fe was almost totally black, and if I were in Kansas I'd have been nervously listening to the weather radio. Topography matters a lot, and in this more mountainous area tornadoes are highly unlikely, lucky me.

I'm joking, because I live in Santa Fe, moved here in 2008 after my divorce.

My son is a PhD student in astronomy at George Mason, University. I often post about him here as My Son The Astronomer.
