Virginia animal rescue believes hounds were dumped after hunting season

HAMPTON ROADS, Va. Hounds are being dumped in the woods or on the side of the road to fend for themselves in rural Hampton Roads, according to officials with a Virginia animal rescue group.
Its calls, emails, Facebook messages, everything, probably 30 dogs today before I came to see you, Linger said.
Linger said typically this happens between hunting seasons when the hounds may not perform up to the owners standard, so they are abandoned. She said animal shelters are completely overrun and have no space to take in the dogs.
"They do not get vet care, and they basically get them when theyre a puppy. They try to train them and run them a few times; if that dog is not running the way they want them to run, they cut them loose, Linger said.

No, they got another hunting dog, and Bella is a treasured pet. She now has a younger brother, who goes off hunting five or six weekends every year.

(15,691 posts)Part Great Dane we found out later! He's such a wonderful family member. (Except for the fact that he jumped on the bed at 4:30 this morning - all 77 pounds of him)
I cannot imagine how anyone could treat a dog like garbage. The people who do this who are the garbage.
This is so cruel.

(15,691 posts)I know what you mean. After our Riley (GSD) died in 2019, we decided we wouldn't have any more dogs (HA!). Then I saw Snoopy on the shelter website and thought "I'll just go meet him." (HA again!)
The police spotted him tied to a tree - only 4 months old - in a homeless camp with no food or water. They confiscated him and now he's sleeping on the bed in our house. So glad I broke the 'no more dogs' rule!

(1,654 posts)Dogs are natural pack animals and socialized dogs will join existing packs for survival and they then turn vicious because those are the rules of the pack.
