Gov. Scott: School staff cuts can save $100M

MONTPELIER — Lawmakers will face a situation next year that they usually try to avoid: supporting a significant increase in the state’s property tax rate in an election year.

Under state law, on Dec. 1 the Vermont tax commissioner is required to calculate the statewide property tax rate based on current spending needs.

Last week, the Scott administration said that it would take a 9-cent increase, about 7 percent, to cover proposed local budgets for next year and to maintain spending levels that were increased in 2017 with nearly $50 million in one-time funds.

But the governor is making it clear that while the projected tax hike is required by law, it doesn’t reflect his position on this issue.
