Protesters at Ben & Jerry's voice concerns about herbicides

BURLINGTON -- Protesters on Church Street Thursday aimed to make a point about a pesticide discovered in Ben & Jerry's ice cream last month by handing out organic ice cream outside the scoop shop.

The demonstration was arranged by the Organic Consumers Association and Regeneration Vermont, which are attempting to get Ben & Jerry's to immediately transition to using only organic ingredients.

However, the pesticide discovered in Ben & Jerry's ice cream has also been found in organic ice cream and other organic products.

The New York Times first reported on July 25 that the herbicide glyphosate was discovered in several flavors of Ben & Jerry's ice cream. The amounts discovered were all far below federal limits set by the Environmental Protection Agency.
