The suspect, Shawn McConnell, was released hours after the assault, despite his lengthy record with law enforcement.

BURLINGTON, Vt. — An 82-year-old man was sent to the hospital after he was punched in the face, knocking him unconscious, Saturday afternoon.

According to Burlington police, the older man was approached, and then assaulted by the suspect on South Winooski Avenue near College Street. Police said they believed it was a random act of violence.

McConnell was released from custody just hours after committing the crime, under court-ordered conditions that he stay away from downtown and show up for his arraignment on Monday.

I spent 2 years in Japan in the late 1970s, and really appreciated their philosophy of saving face - do not behave in such a manner as to bring dishonor to yourself, your family or others.

We could use more of that approach here in the US.
