Utah lawmakers begin massive overhaul of public education statutes

SALT LAKE CITY — Four bills that tidy up the state's public education statutes sailed through the House and Senate on Monday, opening day of the 2018 Utah Legislature.

Two House and two Senate bills seek to clean up the massive education code, eliminate obsolete language and reorganize the statutes that address the state system of public education, funding and local operation of the state's public school system.

HB10, HB11, SB11 and SB12 passed both legislative houses unanimously and advanced to Gov. Gary Herbert for his consideration.

Sen. Ann Millner, R-Ogden, said there were no significant changes in policy in the bills but it was necessary to pass the four bills before new public education proposals can be considered.`1
