A sheriff's officer who threw off his gear and dived into a frozen pond to save an 8-year-old Utah boy on Christmas Day refused to be labeled a hero on Tuesday.
The officer, Washington County sheriff's Sgt. Aaron Thompson, arrived at the frozen pond in New Harmony, in the southern part of the state, after the boy's friend called for help late Monday afternoon, authorities said.
The boy, whose name hasn't been made public, was chasing his dog when he fell through the ice, authorities said. His condition hasn't been disclosed. Thompson suffered only cuts, bruises and symptoms of hypothermia, and he was back at work Tuesday.

Christmas miracle: 8-year-old Utah boy rescued from frozen pond doing well, family says
by ALEX JOHNSON
The 8-year-old Utah boy rescued from a frozen pond by a sheriff's officer on Christmas Day is "doing very well," authorities said Wednesday, quoting his family as saying the boy is awake and coherent.
The Washington County Sheriff's Office identified the boy only as Jason to protect his privacy.
He remained under treatment at a hospital for unspecified injuries late Wednesday, two days after he was submerged for as long as a half-hour in the frigid water in the town of New Harmony, in the southern part of the state, officials said.
Jason's family said in a statement released through the sheriff's office that they wanted to thank the public for "the prayers and thoughtful messages they have received during this difficult time."
