Related: About this forumHey Fellow DUers from UTAH -I'm traveling to your great state
I'm traveling to your great state to take in the natural beauty. We plan a canyon lands loop. We've got all of the famous places on our list but I thought I might reach out and see if anyone has a recommendation for a hidden gem?
We are tent camping, want to hike... do all of the ourdoorsy stuff. But I am a sucker for history.
We have two weeks!
Thanks...

(3,010 posts)a good half day visit is https://bestfriends.org/
This is where Michael Vick's dogs were taken for rehab. They still have some in residence. They do outreach all over the country, and even into Mexico. Wherever a distressed animal is in need, they are on the road to help.
When you go on your hikes, watch the weather very closely. The slot canyons can flood in minutes. They are beautiful, but can be dangerous.
Have fun!

(13,925 posts)the La Sal Mountains, the La Sals are a mountain oasis amidst all the red rock canyons and high desert, might be worth checking out, but you want to check when elk and deer hunting season is, you might want to pass or make sure you are wearing orange when you are out hiking if it is hunting season.
if you are into archaeology you can check out Hovenweep, Edge of the Cedars, and the Anasazi State Park Museum.

(13,609 posts)Also in the Unitas, Lofty Lake Loop is a great hike. My wife and I do that once every couple of months. There are a lot of great trails in that area.

(1,474 posts)...that last one is actually just across the border in Arizona, but all of those I listed are in close proximity to the traditional nat'l parks loop between Moab and Zions. In fact the Escalante Petrified Forest is right smack-dab in between Capitol Reef (Which is AMAZING) and Bryce (Also Stupendous). I listed Mtn. Meadows and Pipe Springs cause you said you liked to check out the history too.
Have a great trip!!
