Utah seeks to cap costs, sign-ups in limited Medicaid plan
SALT LAKE CITY (AP) Utah and other Republican states are proposing to cut costs in the states Medicaid plan to cover the poor by requiring some participants to have jobs and limiting them to five years of coverage.
President Barack Obamas administration rejected the restrictions in the past, but leaders in Utah and other states are proposing them again to take advantage of President Donald Trumps offer to give states more flexibility. Officials in Arizona and other Republican-led states have made similar moves this year.
The changes come as Republicans in Congress work to repeal and replace Obamas law, including some cuts to Medicaid, but its unclear how the proposals in Washington could affect Utahs plan.
Instead of expanding Medicaid to more low-income people, as offered under Obamas Affordable Care Act, Utah wants to take smaller steps to help a subset of the states poorest residents.
