Running outside offers the perpetrators an easy target, and I doubt people planning a home invasion would be shooting off their guns outside to warn their victims ahead of time. I'm just being realistic and practical. That kid was risking his life presenting his face to a window. Even if he wasn't hit by a bullet, he could be scarred for life by broken glass.
