Blue Horizon Texas - Helping long-shot candidates in red and rural areas
Disclaimer: I am not part of this group, just someone who donated after learning about them recently.
In my very red and largely rural North Texas district, Democratic candidates typically get 20-30% of the vote. It can be hard to find people willing to go through the ordeal of running because it just seems like such a lost cause.
However, we have a State House candidate I know of here who decided to run the very last day of filing because nobody else had stepped up, and the Republicans would have been unopposed had she not.
Shortly thereafter, she unexpectedly was contacted by Blue Horizon Texas, and they offered to reimburse her $750 filing fee. Their mission is to help candidates in red or rural races just to get in the game. We have zero chances if we don't even run anyone, so this group aims to at least help us have a presence.
In addition, they picked a few (13 this cycle) candidates statewide they considered to have a legitimate chance to flip a red area, and the House candidate from my district was one of them. After picking her as one of these candidates, they offered to completely redesign her website, which had been cobbled together by a novice, and also to assist with her digital social media presence (all free of charge!). This has an inestimable impact to a small campaign with little funding facing an uphill battle and well-funded opposition from the start.
So here we have an amazing resource for candidates who face daunting odds that I wanted to let everyone know about, in case you were looking for a cool election-related cause to support. I think what they are doing is worthwhile groundwork to help put us back on the playing field even in places nobody expected.
