Texas secessionists feel more emboldened than ever

WACO — Standing in front of a massive state flag on Saturday, Claver Kamau-Imani outlined his utopian vision of a Nation of Texas that he believes is just on the horizon.

No taxes or Faucis, no speed zones or toll roads. No liberals, no gun laws. No windmills, no poor people. A separate currency, stock market and gold depository. “Complete control of our own immigration policy.” World-class college football, a farewell to regulators. And unthinkable, unimaginable wealth.

“We are going to be so rich,” he chanted. “We’re gonna be rich. We are gonna be rich. We. Are. Going. To Be. Rich! … As soon as we declare independence, we're going to be wealthy. I personally believe that our personal GDP will double in five to seven years.”

“The independence of Texas is good for humanity as a whole,” he added to cheers.

Not to mention the political unknown quantity that would result from this would cause many businesses to pull out and go to the US. Y'know, where there are government entities protecting the global trade of those businesses. Instead of the wild west where you have to generate your own power like you're a MASH unit. And where you would be swiftly blockaded and sanctioned because the state you were located in tried to secede. Like the last time some states decided to secede and they were blockaded.

Or, maybe the businesses would try to stay (or be forced to) and cease to exist. Can't keep selling the same crap to each-other, eventually you run out of customers and/or raw materials.

But good luck with your fantasy of being rich. Methinks the Texas dollar would be about as valuable as a 20 year old bottle of Bosco stored in a hot attic.

Oh, you aren't a nation either. You're a state with a bunch of self-congratulatory propaganda. Even heroin dealers know not to get high on their own supply!

Not all of DU, of course, but nuance and context aren't exactly our strong suits.

We can stereotype as well as anyone, though!

I also wish people would understand that this is never going to happen.

First, it's settled law and has been since 1869.

Second, because the actual support in the state has always been pretty low, usually in the 10-15% range. You can get 10% of people to agree to almost anything. These secessionist clowns are a small minority, but a loud one.

It's the same kind of mentality that leads to people thinking that they could defend themselves from the government with their AR15s, if it came to that. They can't look any further than the surface or their dreams of how that would play out would run into a brick wall.

They're also some of the same people who have a fantasyland view of the Civil War.

Meanwhile, how about the federal government:

1. Close ALL FEDERAL INSTALLATIONS AND OPERATIONS IN TEXAS, thereby removing from Texas the multi-billion $$$$ federal payrolls.
2. No longer make Medicare or Medicaid payments to Texas doctors, clinics, or hospitals.
3. Require any Texan entering another state have a Texas passport and be treated as an alien.

Sounds like a good plan to me.

prices for food and other items that they import from anywhere west of North America would skyrocket.
Edit: Also a massive loss of jobs since companies with factories there might have problems operating if they can't get supplies delivered in a timely manner as all trade between the US and Texas would be cut off.

I am constantly amazed by these people who love America so much that they want to secede.

No taxes? How will they pay for those roads that won’t have speed zones? How will they pay for police and fire departments, or for border control agents?

They know this will never happen. They’re just running their mouths and stirring people up. It sounds like they want to secede but keep all the financial support of the United States. That’s not how it works, folks!

There's no mechanism in the US Constitution that allows unilateral secession. Texas has already been told that by SCOTUS, see Texas v White 1868.

Of course they don't care about the Constitution.

I'm in Germany and have been watching the Brexit machinations.
Country borders cause trade friction unless you have a trade agreement like being an EU member.
Some small companies have stopped their export business to the EU because of regulatory compliance costs. Then all goods coming from Texas would have to meet US standards, including food items, be subject to checks at border crossings, probably WTO* tariffs unless negotiated lower.
Large financial companies in England set up offices in the EU to make their business easier. They would have to negotiate trade agreements with every country or trade group, EU, or operate under WTO rules.
Manufacturing would have to make widgets to any new Texas standards, and get export ones made to US standards. These empty cowboy hats don't have a farting clue.
