Wild idea: Rancher offers Elon Musk free land to move Twitter HQ to Williamson County

The headquarters for social media company Twitter is right in the middle of San Francisco.

So why are people discussing the possibility that once new owner Elon Musk takes over, Twitter's corporate offices could move to a plot of ranch land in rural Williamson County?

The far-fetched idea has taken on a life of its own after Jim Schwertner, a Central Texas cattle rancher and businessman, raised the possibility this week on social media.

Schwertner, president and CEO of Schwertner Farms, on Tuesday tweeted at Musk, offering 100 acres of land to the billionaire free of charge if Musk would relocate Twitter's corporate offices to the site. The property is in Schwertner, an unincorporated community east of Jarrell.

“Elon, Move twitter to Schwertner, TX, 38 miles North of Austin and we will give you 100 Acres for FREE,” Schwertner said on the social media site.

I haven't been to Schwertner in about 15 years. The last time I was there it was merely a T-intersection with one stop sign.

I suppose it's possible but the SF based IT people aren't going to like it,especially women and gays. Musk would lose a significant slice of his talent, IMHO.
Of course, TX would gain a new bloc of probable progressive voters.

"Rubes", isn't that short for rubies? Or rubles?

The best and the brightest and most of the rest have no desire to be surrounded by life-denying denizens of delusion, depression and repression.

And no offense to those whose neighbors are less than the best.

4. Williamson County has about 600,000 residents and in the last election voted for Biden.

It is also home to major corporations such as Dell and soon a Samsung microchip factory, plus one of Texas' highest ranking liberal arts institutions (suck it SMU), so you might want to watch who you are calling "rubes." By the way, I'm a graduate of that liberal arts university.

5. I went to school with Jim Schwertner.

He and his family can afford to give away a hundred acres of land in central Texas. With great ease.

6. I've read a little about the Schwertner family,

but I wasn't particularly aware of their financial situation. Owning a lot of land doesn't necessarily mean a lot about someone's financial situation, particularly when it is part of an inheritance.

I suspect that the closest I'll ever get to Schwertner is if I go to the Walburg Mercantile and biergarten as a side excursion when I attend Homecoming at Southwestern.

I'm confident they've now got money flowing in from a number of sources.
