I-40 bridge closure forces more trucks onto streets

Rising truck traffic going both ways on E.H. Crump Boulevard is instantly notable once a driver turns onto one of Memphis’ most recognizable streets.

One driver in a red tractor-trailer successfully completed a left turn coming from E.H. Crump onto South Danny Thomas Boulevard when ongoing traffic slowed just enough to complete the turn. Where it ultimately went is a mystery, but Interstate 40 is near that intersection.

The presence of more trucks has led to an increased — but not halted — traffic on E.H. Crump Boulevard during a week that’s left many truck drivers searching for alternate routes following the Hernando DeSoto Bridge closure earlier this week.

E.H. Crump’s proximity to Interstate 55 makes it a prime destination for truck drivers to utilize and also likely means they will venture on streets of nearby neighborhoods in Downtown and South Memphis.
