Bill would allow business owners to vote where they own business

Business owners would be able to vote in elections where the business property is located, even if the owner doesn’t live in the same place as the business, under a bill being considered by the Tennessee General Assembly.

It’s sponsored by Knoxville Republican state Sen. Becky Duncan Massey, who says it’s an issue of “taxation without representation.”

The bill expands “property rights voting,” which allows non-resident property owners to vote where they own. Cities may permit non-resident property owners to vote, according to the Tennessee Secretary of State.

The effort is mainly targeted at suburban Knox County residents, and out-of-state business owners wouldn’t be able to vote under this measure. Massey’s bill would give two members of an LLC the right to vote and states: “An individual must not vote more than once in an election.”

To people who don’t live in the city. Lemme guess, students still can’t use their dorm addresses to establish residency?

That could give a lot of influence and intimidation to the business owner. Maybe that’s the next step - sold on convenience and productivity.

I think residency should be a requirement just like it is for elected officials.

Then those that are denied the right to vote by re-publican rule should not have to pay any local taxes. Those business owner should get to pay city income taxes also.
