"Tennessee House Speaker Cameron Sexton's recent appointment of long-time activist Laurie Cardoza-Moore to the Tennessee State Textbook Commission is already garnering backlash from some community members.

On Tuesday, the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR) — the nation's largest Muslim civil rights and advocacy organization — called on Sexton to rescind Cardoza-Moore's appointment to the commission, which oversees the official list of textbooks and instructional materials recommended for use by Tennessee students. 

“This individual should not be anywhere near the selection of textbooks in Tennessee or any state. She clearly has anti-Muslim views that inevitably would negatively impact any textbook selection. We would urge the speaker to rescind the appointment immediately," CAIR National Communications Director Ibrahim Hooper said in a statement Tuesday.

"Speaking only for myself and not the Board of Education or school district, I believe Ms. Moore is unsuited to be on a textbook selection committee and her inclusion would be contrary to the best interests of Tennessee students," Welch said in an email. "Moore's very public history includes countless inflammatory and discriminatory statements, spreading fabricated and false rumors of an imagined school-shooting threat at a WCS high school, and a failed attempt at appointment to the Board of Education resulting in widespread and vocal community opposition."

Welch also noted that during her attempts to have a textbook removed from Williamson County classrooms, her complaints were "judged to be inaccurate and she admitted to never actually reading the textbook by way of explanation."...(more)
