Former Murfreesboro dentist Nate Schott gets 33 months in prison for health care fraud

Richard "Nate" Schott, the ex-Murfreesboro dentist who grifted nearly $1 million from insurance companies, is headed to prison for 33 months.

U.S. District Court Judge Waverly Crenshaw handed down the sentence Friday morning before a courtroom crowd of about 50 people. Crenshaw also ordered Schott to receive drug treatment and mental health help. Letters from Schott's supporters detailed an abusive childhood and an addiction to opioids. The judge called Schott's actions "inexplicable," especially Schott continuing the fraud after being notified his businesses were being audited.

Schott, 52, pleaded guilty to conspiracy to commit health care fraud. He asked the judge for 18 months maximum behind bars, but prosecutors wanted four years.

He must report to prison by July 30, Crenshaw ordered. Once he has served time, Schott will be placed on supervised release for three years.
