Group seeks to remove Harris as local Democratic Party chairman

A group of local Democrats is attempting to overturn the April Shelby County Democratic Party convention vote that made Michael Harris the new chairman of the local party.

The effort by Julie Byrd-Ashworth, Sanjeev Memula and Sarah Turner questions the voting procedure used at the April 6 convention. And in an addendum, Byrd-Ashworth also calls for Harris’ removal because Harris filed for bankruptcy eight times between May 2016 and May 2017.

According to federal bankruptcy court records, after the eighth filing, which was dismissed like the previous seven, the court found the filings were “clearly an abuse of the bankruptcy system.”

The court also barred Harris from filing any bankruptcy petitions for five years.
