Harwell's bill to impose 'work requirements' on TennCare recipients advances

A House committee has approved House Speaker Beth Harwell’s legislation to implement work requirements for some beneficiaries of the state’s Medicaid program.

The proposal, HB 1551, directs the state Department of Finance and Administration to seek a federal waiver to impose work requirements for able-bodied, working age adults without dependent children under 6 years old.

The legislation comes on the heels of the Trump administration's decision to allow states to implement such work requirements.

In a statement distributed when she first announced the legislation, Harwell, who is running for governor, said the measure was an effort to lift people out of poverty.
