Anderson liquor store owner charged with tax evasion after failure to report $1M in sales

An Anderson business owner was arrested by the South Carolina Department of Revenue on Friday after he failed to report $1.2 million in sales, according to authorities.

Jonathan Doyle Martin, the owner of Palmetto Spirits and Palmetto Liquors, is charged with two counts of tax evasion, according to a release from the Department of Revenue and jail records.

Martin filed state sales tax returns for years 2013 and 2014 claiming a total of $3,654,478 in sales, but an investigation revealed actual sales to be $4,918,089 for that same time period, the Department of Revenue said.

As a result, Martin evaded paying $75,817 in sales tax to the state, the Department of Revenue said.
