New South Carolina law puts liability on bars that over-serve

Three years ago this weekend, Jacob Richardson’s life veered tragically off course at 108 mph.

The Dillon police officer was rushing to help a county deputy who’d been called to break up a fight at a bar called Stables. When angry drunks surrounded his patrol car, he radioed for back-up.

Richardson, 24, was one of five responding officers — all in separate cruisers running in tandem, lights flashing and sirens blaring through the Pee Dee night. He was in the fourth car.

About a mile out from Stables, they came up on a Mitsubishi that had allegedly just left the bar. The car suddenly decided to make a left turn, just after the third cop car passed.
