Sales tax referendum to benefit I-526 extension project to appear on Nov. ballot

CHARLESTON COUNTY, S.C. (WCSC) - Charleston County voters will see a transportation sales tax and use referendum question on their ballots this upcoming November.

The County Council voted on this referendum for the third and final time at Tuesday night’s meeting. The final vote was 6-2 in favor of the half-cent sales tax with one council member absent.

This referendum will provide around $5.4 billion to be used towards road projects and improvements in the county with the top priority project being the extension of the Mark Clark Expressway.

However, areas including James Island, John’s Island, West Ashley, Mount Pleasant, North Charleston, and the upper peninsula of Charleston are supposed to receive roadway improvements as well.
