SC Senate panel advances its 'Save Women's Sports Act,' a transgender athlete ban

COLUMBIA — Lawmakers in the South Carolina Senate are moving forward with legislation barring transgender athletes from competing as a gender different than the one listed on their birth certificates.

A subcommittee of the Senate Education Committee voted March 15 to advance its version of the “Save Women’s Sports Act,” which would designate the gender listed on one’s birth certificate as their de facto gender for intramural or interscholastic competition.

The legislation would also end the existing waiver process under the South Carolina High School League. It allowed transgender athletes to apply to compete for intramural or interscholastic athletics teams designated for a gender different than that on their birth certificate.

The 3-1 vote comes a week after a House subcommittee contemplated its own version of the ban in a subcommittee of the House Committee on Education and Public Works, which has yet to take a vote on its bill.
