Clemson may ban new apartments, townhomes in city limits. But it won't last forever.

Clemson City Council will hear a proposal to ban any multi-family housing developments for the foreseeable future, a win for many residents who've vocally opposed the city's policies on growth for years.

The ban would mean no new apartments, townhomes, or mixed-use buildings until the City Council reverses the ban, a date for which has not been announced. It's meant to allow the city time to implement its sweeping strategic plan to curb unrestricted growth in the city.

The ordinance was passed by planning commission Tuesday night with a recommendation that City Council pass this with a time limit. City Council will take up this issues at a March 25 public hearing before it's voted into law.

"Whether it's a good idea or not, this is keeping with the strategic plan," Director of City Planning and Codes Todd Steadman said Tuesday night.
