A small victory in SC

A ritual for the past two decades has been for my next door neighbor and me to put up our yard signs about the same time during elections every two years. My neighbor, who is a devout Catholic and old-time Republican, told me that Trump had lost his vote with his shameful performance during the Puerto Rican hurricane in 2017.
During a discussion yesterday about our tomato plants, he informed me that he will also not support the re-election of Gov Henry McMaster because of his insistence to re-open the schools and refusal to issue a statewide mask requirement (his wife has several high risk factors and would be unlikely to survive the virus). He said he hopes that his party can come to their senses so our political alliance will last only as long as it takes to rid the GOP of Trumpism.

What surprised me was the statement he made explaining his conversion. He said the most important thing any government can do is demonstrate competence and honesty, and both of these qualities are lacking in our Statehouse and the White House.
So he will not have a sign in his yard this year, but we will have his vote.

He knows Graham personally and the Senator has helped him on a few occasions, so he won't abandon him even though he is not happy with his subservience to trump.
While he is a good guy, and as I said very religious, he is about 70 and is somewhat racist. He probably doesn't think so, but he is nostalgic about the Civil War (he has a photo of a relative who fought in the war and lived until 1910) and just can't take the leap to vote for a black candidate. He does, however, have an overall favorable impression of Obama's tenure, again with the theme of competence and honesty, even though he voted against him twice.

5. The only way to beat repubs in SC statewide elections

is to have the far right-wing disillusioned to the degree that they refuse to vote for the R. I don't really see that with Graham.

My current guess, and I think the consensus of Party activists here, is that if the election were held today Graham would win with a historic low margin of 4-5%, with Trump taking the state by about the same margin. Considering that trump won SC by 15% and Graham by 16% the last time they ran, this shows some significant progress, and we are not giving up on pulling the big upset.

And not THE PARTY, and the people, and the Billions of dollars that went into funding, cultivating, and nurturing the vast organizations and “base” of imbeciles and bigots that made Trump INEVITABLE!!!

That he does not recognize that, that the GOP has to be burned to the ground, is why he’ll be back in four years with his red campaign signs

9. So do I but it is changing for the better. The repugs rigged the state districts so they could

more easily win, I hope that we get some sort of voter initiative in place to have voters do district boundaries etc. like they have in some states. Especially when the larger cities contain far more democratic voters than in outlying MO. Take care!
