Conservative governor and legislature passed a law requiring voter ID, ostensibly as protection against "voter fraud," despite there being no evidence at all of fraud. The real fraud is that people who don't have picture IDs--students, elderly, poor--tend to vote Democratic, so the effective result of the law is to suppress turnout for Democrats.

Because of our, ah, less than stellar record on civil rights, South Carolina has to submit laws that affect voting to the US Department of Justice for review. DOJ completely invalidated the law.

Now if we can just get rid of those electronic voting machines, we might have a shot at fair elections.
