Falling 68 votes shy, Democratic candidate for Senate District 17 asks for recount

One candidate who ran for the General Assembly in Tuesday’s primary asked the Rhode Island Board of Elections for a recount by the 4 p.m. deadline to request one on Wednesday.

The request came from Senate District 17 Democratic candidate Alexander Azar, Board of Elections spokesperson Chris Hunter confirmed.

Azar, the son of Lincoln Town Councilor Pamela Azar, lost by 68 votes to Cameron Deutsch in the primary for the district spanning parts of Lincoln, North Providence and Smithfield. Under state law, a candidate can request a recount if they are trailing by 2% or 200 votes (whichever is less) in races in which no more than 20,000 votes were cast.

The still unofficial results show Azar garnered 566 votes or 47.2% and Deutsch received 634 or 52.8%.
