R.I. Assembly plans brief return to deal with gun background checks, gay parents' rights, and more
PROVIDENCE — Rhode Island’s legislative leaders are laying the groundwork for an unusual, but not unprecedented, one- or two-day summer session the week of July 13.
The State House is still closed to the public. But if all goes according to plan, a number of House and Senate committees will meet remotely next week to vote on bills ripe for action when the Assembly went on a months-long hiatus on March 12 — or seen as a necessary step now to stanch racial unrest.
The full House and Senate would then convene a week later to move these bills along to the governor, to be signed into law, with the understanding the lawmakers will need to return at least once more to approve a budget for the year that began July 1.
The House plans to meet on Thursday, July 16, and the Senate, possibly, on Monday, July 13.
