Austrian company purchases rights to 38 Studios games
PROVIDENCE Another chapter in Rhode Islands long, painful 38 Studios saga has closed as an Austrian company announced Thursday that it has purchased out of receivership the remaining game and intellectual property that had belonged to the failed, state-backed video-game company.
THQ Nordic bought the rights to Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning, the lone game 38 Studios released; the Amalur franchise and the work that had gone into 38 Studios unfinished massively multiple player online game Project Copernicus, court-appointed receiver Richard Land said Thursday.
The sale price: $900,000.
That money, along with the proceeds from sales of other 38 Studios equipment and property over the past six years, will go toward paying down Rhode Islands debt from guaranteeing a $75-million loan to the company.
Due to the cost of preserving the digital assets and trying to find a buyer for them, Land said the total going back to the state would be only slightly more than $900,000.
