Ex-Newport police union treasurer pleads guilty to wire fraud
PROVIDENCE, R.I. — A former treasurer for a Newport police officers union admitted converting more than $31,000 in union funds for his own use, law enforcement officials said in a press release Thursday.
Adam Conheeny, 46, of Portsmouth, a former Newport police officer, pleaded guilty Thursday to one count of wire fraud, according to the announcement from Michael Mikulka, special agent in charge, New York region, U.S. Department of Labor Office of Inspector General, and Rhode Island State Police Supt. Ann C. Assumpico.
Conheeny was the former treasurer for the Newport Police Department Fraternal Order of Police, Newport Lodge No. 8. He is the second former official to admit to stealing from the union.
Conheeny admitted that between August 2009 and December 2014 he used a union debit card to pay for personal expenses, wrote checks payable to himself and withdrew cash from the FOP bank account for his own use. Conheeny admitted to fraudulently converting about $31,413 in FOP funds for his own use.
