PawSox bill passes the RI Senate, moves to a House vote

The Rhode Island Senate pushes the $83 million funding proposal for a PawSox stadium in Pawtucket closer to reality with a 26-9 vote this afternoon.

The senate vote is a blow to those in Worcester pushing for a PawSox move. But it doesn’t mean the city is out of the fight. The Senate vote moves the proposal to the House, where it faces more public opposition. One of the most vocal opponents, Speaker of the House Nick Mattiello, plans to hold a public hearing before the House vote, according to a spokesman.

Nearly every senator who spoke Tuesday afternoon was in favor of the bill, which they touted as a net positive investment that would benefit the city of Pawtucket and the state. They also referenced the threat of a move out of state if the bill is not passed.

The PawSox said in a statement issued shortly after the vote the organization is pleased with the outcome.

I have so many memories of going to pawsox games with my parents and friends as a kid. We used to get tickets on July 3rd or 4th (whenever the fireworks were going to happen) and stay after the game to watch the display.

I have been hoping they stay so I can carry on the tradition with my daughter when she gets a little older.
