PawSox bill passes the RI Senate, moves to a House vote
The Rhode Island Senate pushes the $83 million funding proposal for a PawSox stadium in Pawtucket closer to reality with a 26-9 vote this afternoon.
The senate vote is a blow to those in Worcester pushing for a PawSox move. But it doesnt mean the city is out of the fight. The Senate vote moves the proposal to the House, where it faces more public opposition. One of the most vocal opponents, Speaker of the House Nick Mattiello, plans to hold a public hearing before the House vote, according to a spokesman.
Nearly every senator who spoke Tuesday afternoon was in favor of the bill, which they touted as a net positive investment that would benefit the city of Pawtucket and the state. They also referenced the threat of a move out of state if the bill is not passed.
The PawSox said in a statement issued shortly after the vote the organization is pleased with the outcome.
