Occupy protestors seek homeless shelter

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WPRI) - Occupy Providence protestors are seeking more input about their offer to pack up their camp, in exchange for a new homeless day shelter.

Members of the protest movement were scheduled to meet with local homeless advocates Tuesday, to discuss the proposal.

Protestors have been camped out in Burnside Park since October and have been negotiating with the city on how to end the protest peacefully for weeks.

Providence Mayor Angel Taveras has said he wants more details from Occupy Providence on what their proposed shelter would entail ...

PROVIDENCE, R.I.—Providence Mayor Angel Taveras (tuh-VEHR'-us) says he does not expect the city to open a day shelter demanded by Occupy Providence as a condition of the group disbanding its encampment.

Taveras said Wednesday he believes the city can address the needs of the homeless highlighted by the group by tapping existing programs and services.

Occupy Providence voted last month to end its encampment at Burnside Park if the city opened a day shelter for the homeless. The encampment began on Oct. 15.

Taveras says he shares the protesters' concerns and wants to push for more job training and substance abuse counseling for the homeless ...
