RhodeWorks signs no longer allowed to bear Raimondo's name

PROVIDENCE, R.I. — Gov. Gina Raimondo can no longer put her name on the big blue “RhodeWorks” signs marking progress of highway projects across the state.

The Federal Highway Administration has found the hundreds of signs scattered over roads and bridges are “not in compliance” with federal traffic regulations, Carlos Machado, Federal Highway’s administrator for Rhode Island, said Wednesday.

He said he expects the state DOT to send him a new plan for the sign program for his approval by Friday.

Machado declined to discuss whether federal highway officials had looked at the design for the RhodeWorks signs before they were installed or became controversial.
