Homeless man charged in attempts to rob 3 Providence banks, police say
PROVIDENCE, R.I. A man tried to rob three banks in three days, but, the police say, nothing went right for him.
First, he tried to rob the Coastway Credit Union in downtown on Friday afternoon, but the teller gave him more dye packs than money, said Maj. David Lapatin. When the dye packs exploded, the would-be robber dropped his bag of stolen cash, leaving everything behind for the police to find.
Three hours later, just before 5 p.m., the same man was standing before a teller at the Bank of America branch at 661 Broadway, in Olneyville, with another note demanding money within 30 seconds. Despite the note and banging on the counter, the suspect couldnt get the teller to move fast enough, so he left empty-handed, Lapatin said.
By Sunday afternoon, the same man was trying again, this time at the TD Bank at 180 Westminster St., in downtown. He was wiser, giving the teller a note that explicitly said no dye packs or GPS, according to police.
