Rhode Island sues Hewlett Packard over long-delayed computer system for DMV
PROVIDENCE, R.I. — Rhode Island Tuesday sued Hewlett Packard Enterprise, the contractor working on a new Division of Motor Vehicles computer system, for breach of contract and allegedly demanding an additional $12 million to complete the long-delayed project.
In a complaint filed in state Superior Court, the state asks for an injunction preventing HP from stopping work on the project, which is nearly complete after a decade.
“I will do whatever is necessary to protect Rhode Island’s taxpayers against an IT vendor unfairly demanding more money to complete an eight-year-old computer upgrade," Governor Raimondo said in a statement. "When we can finally see the finish line, HPE is trying to double the price of this project. I intend to see that Rhode Islanders get the computer system for which they have already paid. Hewlett Packard Enterprise contracted itself to complete the Division of Motor Vehicles computer project, and CEO Meg Whitman herself pledged HPE to delivering a solution the people of Rhode Island deserve. On behalf of the residents of Rhode Island, I will hold HPE accountable.”
Two weeks ago, the Journal reported that the planned December launch of the computer system, which replaces a 30-year-old mainframe and is expected to reduce customer wait times, had been pushed back from December to the end of June. DMV officials then said they were "currently revising" the estimated cost of the system.
